As children continue to grow, make sure that you are providing them with the proper care they need.
Congratulations on the newest addition to your family. We know you must be excited. You certainly learn a lot as a first-time parent. Of course, we know that you want to do everything possible to keep your little one healthy. Our Quad Cities area pediatricians, Dr. Nafees Khan and Dr. David Bunker, offer up some recommendations for how to make sure your newborn is getting everything they need to grow up healthy and strong.
When newborns aren’t sleeping they will most likely be eating. In fact, your little one will need to eat about every 2-3 hours. If your child is fussy or cranky this is often a telltale sign that they need to eat. By sticking to a specific feeding schedule you’ll be less likely to deal with an unhappy newborn.
While parents often joke with each other that no one sleeps once the baby comes, newborns can sleep as much as 16 hours a day. A good rule of thumb is, if your child is sleeping you should also be sleeping. Sure, we aren’t saying that you won’t feel sleep deprived at some point as a new parent, but getting sleep when your baby does is key. If you are concerned about your child’s sleeping patterns or if you don’t think they are getting enough sleep then this is certainly something to discuss with our Quad Cities children’s doctors.
